How many guests can be on a private boat charter?

This sailboat is USCG-licensed for 6 passengers maximum, including children and infants. This limit is federally regulated and cannot be exceeded, regardless of age, size, or weight. Six people fit comfortably with plenty of room to move around, relax, and enjoy the sail boat NYC experience.

Are kids allowed on the sailboat?

Absolutely. Families are welcome, and the boat is a safe, engaging environment for children. New York State law requires children under 12 to wear life jackets while underway. USCG-approved life jackets in all sizes are provided onboard.

What should I wear for a sailing charter?

Dress casually and comfortably, the same way you’d dress for an extended outdoor activity. Layers work best since it’s often cooler on the water than on land. In warmer months, guests are barefoot; in spring and fall, white soft-soled shoes are ideal. Sunglasses and sunscreen are recommended on sunny days. Wraps and blankets are available onboard if needed.

Can the catering be customized? Some of my guests have food allergies.

Yes, this NYC sailboat cruise can accommodate most dietary restrictions with at least a 3-day advance notice. Please let us know if you or your guests are vegan or lactose intolerant or have special needs.

Can I bring my own food and drinks when I’m renting a boat in NYC?

Yes. You’re welcome to bring your own food and beverages onboard (BYOB +$100 fee applies). Alternatively, you can order from our catering and beverage menu, which includes brunch, lunch, appetizer packages, and all-inclusive open bar options. Beverages can be purchased onboard. Catering requires at least 24 hours’ notice.

Arrival & Logistics

Where does the boat depart from?

All charters depart from Chelsea Piers Marina at Pier 59 on Manhattan’s west side. The location is convenient, accessible, and offers easy boarding. View specific arrival details here:

Is parking available?

Yes. Valet parking is available directly at Pier 59, adjacent to the marina. Street parking is limited in the area, so the valet option eliminates typical NYC parking challenges. Car service and taxi drop-off is also straightforward.

What if someone in my group is running late?

Your boat rental in NYC won’t leave without you—that’s one advantage of booking a private boat. However, late arrivals do cut into your reserved time on the water and may limit how much of the route you’re able to see during your charter.

Where should our group meet before boarding?

Two convenient spots near the marina are ideal for gathering beforehand. The Water Hazard Bar & Lounge at Chelsea Piers Golf Club has a side entrance that opens toward the docks. Pier 57, just steps away, offers a food hall, public seating, and a rooftop park with views of the boats and marina.

Weather & Safety

What happens if the weather is bad?

The captain makes the final safety call approximately two hours before your scheduled departure. If rain or weather conditions are unsafe, your charter will be rescheduled at no additional cost. Weather-related rescheduling is complimentary and flexible.

Will I get seasick?

Most guests don’t experience any issues. The New York Harbor is sheltered water without ocean surf, but if you’re prone to motion sensitivity, taking motion-sickness medication before boarding is a good precaution. The captain can also adjust the route if needed for added comfort.

Is the boat safe?

Yes. This sailboat can sail across the Atlantic Ocean. And, your captain is USCG-licensed with experience and prioritizes safety at all times. Life jackets are available for all passengers, and safety briefings are provided before departure.

The Onboard Experience

How close do we get to the Statue of Liberty?

Close! It feels like we can almost touch her. The US Coast Guard security zone is 150 yards—close enough for incredible photos and an intimate view, far enough to take in the full monument. All vessels, except for the National Park public ferry, are prohibited from docking or disembarking passengers on Liberty Island.

What sights can I see?

Sightseeing is customized based on the sights you want to see and what the wind and tides will allow. Suggested itineraries can be viewed here:

Can I steer the boat?

Absolutely, and it’s one of the most popular parts of the experience. The sailboat has dual steering wheels, and guests are welcome to take the helm under the captain’s guidance. It’s hands-on, fun, and memorable.

Can we swim or jump in the water?

Swimming is not permitted, and you probably won’t want to. The city waterways are notorious for higher bacteria levels from sewer overflows.

Can we play our own music?

Yes. The boat is equipped with a Bluetooth sound system. Connect your phone and play whatever music fits the mood of your charter. You control the vibe.

Is there a bathroom on board?

Yes. The sailboat has a fully equipped marine lavatory with running water, a flushing toilet, and personal cloth hand towels. It’s modern, clean, and maintained throughout the day—a feature guests consistently appreciate.

Is smoking or vaping allowed?

No. For safety reasons, open flames, smoking, and vaping are not permitted anywhere on the boat.

After Your Charter

How much should we tip the captain?

Gratuity of 18-22% is standard for private luxury boat charters in NYC. Online bookings allow you to pre-tip, or you can tip in person using cash, Venmo, PayPal, or Google Pay.

What’s nearby after we finish sailing?

Chelsea Piers is surrounded by some of Manhattan’s best attractions. Many guests continue their day at the High Line, Little Island, Chelsea Market, or one of the many nearby restaurants and bars. The neighborhood pairs perfectly with a day on the water.

Can I book multiple charters or recurring dates?

Yes. Whether you’re planning a series of corporate events, recurring team outings, or just love being on the water, reach out to discuss multi-charter packages or reserved recurring time slots.

Booking & Policies

What’s your cancellation policy?

Most NYC rent a boats don’t offer flexible booking options, but we do. The Standard Reservation is non-refundable with complimentary weather-related rescheduling, and the Premium Reservation includes Travel Protection with more flexible cancellation and rescheduling choices. Full policy details are available on the Booking Terms page.

How far in advance should I book?

Peak season weekends (May through September) and sunset time slots book well in advance. Weekday availability tends to be more flexible. For special dates like proposals, birthdays, or the 4th of July, reserve as early as possible—sometimes months ahead.
